Dawsonite as a Temporary but Effective Sink for Geological Carbon Storage

چکیده
The possibility of using dawsonite mineral trapping as a carbon capture and storage (CCS) strategy intrigues many. In this study, we used dawsonite-rich (∼10%) CO2 gas reservoir in the Hailar basin northern China natural analogue site, along with numerical modeling, to demonstrate that large amount can be generated sandstone formations, provided sufficient Na-rich feldspar are available. While precipitated preserved only hydrodynamically-closed system long term under high fugacity log((Na+)/(H+)) activities solution, short-term (on order 10 kyr) is possible lowers pressure, which mitigates risk leakage ground surface or overlying drinking water aquifers. re-dissolution after few thousand years facilitates progressive dissipation phase over time. Consideration reservoirs saline aquifers minerals formation provide abundance dissolved sodium, significantly increases number potential CCS sites globally. Furthermore, alternating water-and-gas injection regimens could enhance precipitation Future editions Carbon Storage Atlas should consider aquifer geochemistry site selection for secure long-term addition volumetric considerations operation.

متن کاملCarbon dioxide capture and geological storage.
Carbon dioxide capture and geological storage is a technology that could be used to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere from large industrial installations such as fossil fuel-fired power stations by 80-90%. It involves the capture of carbon dioxide at a large industrial plant, its transport to a geological storage site and its long-term isolation in a geological storage reservoir...
متن کاملBuilding Confidence in Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide
In recent years, carbon dioxide capture and its geological storage (CCS) has been recognized as one of the most effective tools to mitigate climate change with its vast potential and cost effectiveness. With this background, many countries around the world have started to study on its technical aspects as well as economic aspects. In some countries, several commercial or experimental plants are...
متن کاملCombustion of Biomass as a Global Carbon Sink
This commentary article highlights the important role of black carbon produced from biomass burning in the global carbon cycle. Consideration of the fundamental chemistry and thermokinetics of cellulose thermal decomposition suggests that suppression of biomass burning or biasing burning practices to produce soot-free flames must inevitably transfer more carbon to the atmosphere. A simple order...
